STEPS FOR HEALTHY SWIMMING
Before you get in
- Make sure the drain at the bottom of the deep end is visible. Check that the drain covers appear to be secured and in good condition.
- Check for lifeguard(s):
- If on duty, the lifeguard(s) should be focused on swimmers and not distracted.
- If no lifeguard is on duty, do not enter the pool deck area.
- Make sure you are aware of all pool rules, areas of deep water, and the swim test policy.
Check yourself
- Stay out of the water if you are sick with diarrhea. If you have been diagnosed with Crypto, don't go back in the water until two weeks after diarrhea has completely stopped.
- Stay out of the water if you have an open cut or wound (particularly from a surgery or piercing). If you do go in the water, use waterproof bandages to completely cover the cut or wound.
- Shower before you get in the water. Rinsing off in the shower for just one-minute removes most of the dirt or anything else on your body that uses up chlorine needed to kill or inactivate germs.
Once you are in
- Don't pee or poop in the water.
- Don't swallow the water.
- Use well-fitting, Coast Guard-approved life jackets, not air-filled toys (for example, water wings), for flotation assistance.
- Keep an eye on children at all times. Kids can drown in seconds and in silence.
- Take kids on bathroom breaks and check swim diapers every hour.
- Change swim diapers away from the water to keep germs from getting in.
- Dry ears thoroughly after swimming.
Fecal Contamination Pool Closure
- The pool will be closed for 12 hours in the event of liquid stool in the pool.

- All swimmers who do not have a green swim necklace must be within arms reach of an adult to be in water above their shoulders.
- No smoking, ecigs or vaping on YMCA premises.
- Keep all food and drinks out of pool.
- No glass on the pool deck.
- No swimming, walking, or standing in front of the slides.
- Please walk on the pool deck at all times.
- Starting blocks are not to be used during free swim times.
- Floatation devices that do not snap between the legs may not be used on the slide.
- No underwater breath holding activities.
- Swimmers cannot be on another’s head, neck, or shoulders.
- All jumps off the diving board must be forward and cannot result in the swimmer coming back towards the diving board.
- Diving must be done in water that is at least 9 feet deep.
- Please do not distract the lifeguards while they are guarding.
- Obey the lifeguards at all times.
- Do not swallow or spit or pool water.

INCLEMENT WEATHER PLAN
The YMCA pools will close when there is:
- Thunder and/or lightning in the local area or if lightning is detected within a 10-mile radius to the facility.
- Heavy rain that hinders lifeguard visibility.
- A tornado warning. In the event of a tornado warning, all members and program participants shall be evacuated to a safe interior room. Check with your direct supervisor as to the proper location for your facility.
The pools will remain closed until:
- 30 minutes after last thunder or lightning.
- Tornado warning has expired.
The lifeguards on duty shall close and re-open the pools according to the Inclement Weather Plan.
When the pools are closed the lifeguards shall:
- Immediately clear the pools and decks of all swimmers.
- Lock the entrance to the pools.
If there is anticipated inclement weather, then the pools may not open for scheduled times. If Autauga County public schools close then the YMCA may adjust our schedule for the day.
