Swim Testing & Swim Band Program

At the Prattville YMCA, safety is our number one concern.  In an effort to maintain safety around the pool, we will begin swim testing all swimmers ages 14 and under who wish to swim in deep water at each of our branches.  Deep water is defined as water that is above the shoulders while standing flat-footed in the pool.

Purpose: A major part of the lifeguard’s job is to prevent accidents or incidents.  In an effort to enhance accident prevention, the Swim Band Program will be in effect at each branch.  It is designed to recognize and identify deep-water swimmers up through the age of 14.

Swim Test Description: A skill proficiency test including a demonstration of their degree of confidence.   A member will report to the lifeguard office located on the pool deck to request a swim test. A lifeguard will administer the Swim Band Test utilizing a non-crowded, outside lane.  The lifeguard will carry a rescue tube while administering the Swim Band Test.  For the Deep Water Swim Band, the swimmer, without aid, must confidently and proficiently be able to…
Swim 25 yards of either front crawl with rhythmic breathing or breaststroke continuously.
o The final component includes having the swimmer, or their parent, read the Pool Rules.

NOTE:  LIFEGUARDS HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO QUESTION AND RETEST ANYONE APPEARING TO HAVE LOW SKILL PROFICIENCY OR LOW CONFIDENCE.

 Bands:

No Band: A non-swimmer or beginner who is restricted to the shallow water.  This may also be a swimmer who has either forgotten or lost his or her Swimmer’s Band and now must be restricted to the shallow water.  He may rent a swim band or purchase a new one from the Member Services’ Desk.  A no band swimmer may swim in deep water if within arms reach of an adult.

Green Band:  Swimmers who successfully complete the above swim test.

Swim Bands should never be loaned to others.  Swimmers who are found to loan their band will lose the use of their band for two weeks.

Documentation: Any Swim Band Candidate having passed the swim test will have their name recorded in the
Swim Band Database.

o At each pool visit, swim bands must be worn around the neck to let our staff know they are deep-water swimmers.

o If swim band is forgotten, members may rent a Green swim band for $1.00 from the Member Services’ desk. The band is to be returned when they leave for the day.  A $3 deposit will be required.  When the band is returned, $2 will be returned to the swimmer.

o If swim band is lost,  the replacement may be purchased for a fee of $3.00.
